Our Programs

NYWC currently provides ongoing weekly creative writing workshops throughout NYC. We operate a a Youth Writers program,and a Supportive Housing/Homeless program, as well as workshops for other unheard New Yorkers. Some of our current and recent workshops include:

Youth Writers Workshops

Ali Forney Center:  A drop-in center for homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered teens.

Arab American Family Support Center: Workshop for children of recent Arab immigrants in Downtown Brooklyn.

The Blossom Program For Girls:  A program for teenage girls at high risk of gang involvement in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, operated by Youth Empowerment Mission Inc.

Brooklyn Public Library, New Lots BranchProgram for East NY teens and kids.

Brooklyn Public Library, Eastern Parkway BranchProgram for Crown Heights teens and kids.

Fort Greene Park Summer Literary Festival:  Two summer-long, outdoor writing workshops for young people in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

Imani House: at P.S. 282 in Park Slope, Brooklyn.  An after school program for elementary school children, providing support and assistance to immigrant and economically disadvantaged residents of the community.

Inwood House:   Programs for pregnant and parenting teenage girls in the foster care system.

Queens Public Library, Broadway Branch:   Workshop for children of recent immigrants in Long Island City.

Ridge Girls: Program for teen girls in Brooklyn Public Library, Bay Ridge Branch.

Sylvia’s Place: An emergency night shelter for homeless LGBT teens at the Metropolitan Community Church in Manhattan.

Supportive Housing/Homeless Writers Workshops

Jan Hus Church Homeless Outreach and Advocacy Program:   Direct services for homeless people on the Upper East Side.

Judson Post Hall Residence For Women: Women's residence in downtown Brooklyn operated by the YWCA of Brooklyn.

Other Program Sites

14th Street Y Educational Center for Retired Adults:  A program of classes for older adults, operated by The Educational Alliance.

Brooklyn Veterans Resource Center: Services for male and female veterans of Vietnam, the Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Creative Center:  Arts center for people living with cancer.

The Fortune Society: Services for people coming out of and serving in lieu of incarceration.

NY Public Library Aguilar Language Learning Center: Program of classes in Adult Basic Education and ESOL in East Harlem.

Prime Time:  Two workshops for older adults in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn at Emmanuel Baptist Church.

SAGE: Community center for GLBT elders.

Stay N Out/Serendipity:  Residence house in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, for formerly incarcerated women seeking substance abuse treatment, operated by NY Therapeutic Communities.

World Trade Center Survivors Network:  A support and advocacy group for survivors of the attacks on the World Trade Center.
