Down the Rabbit Hole

Lori Romero

Parents who are desperate to reach their
autistic children often look for miracles

˜ Temple Grandin

my boy broke the telephone
he feared would ring
again and the chair I scraped
'cross the floor to stop him
from painting the walls
with oatmeal and chocolate
i gave the hoover to my sister
cuz the noise was too loud
so i get down on my hands
and knees to scoop up dirt
from the plant he yanks
out of the pot and he leaves
me a string of clothes to the livin'
room where he is naked
and pullin' down the curtain
so everybody in the cars
drivin' by can see him dancin'
in the window and he wipes
his dirty bottom 'cross the carpet
and over the furniture i can't clean
cuz he goes to the bathroom
and empties shampoo
over the floor and dumps toilet
paper in the bowl with some toys
and he cries with his hands clamped
over his ears cuz i shouted
he flaps his arms and twirls
the shiny soap dish close to his face
his other arm hugs me close
i feel his raggedy breath on my neck
then he is off to the bedroom
